Little Switzerland’s Berliner Künstlerworkshop: 1997-1999
In the three years that it ran, from 1997 to 1999, Little Switzerland’s pioneering residency program brought more than 80 young Swiss artists to Berlin. The program offered recent graduates from Zürich’s Graduate School for Art and Design access to Berlin’s vibrant cultural scene at a time that was pivotal both in the history of the city, and in the personal development of the participating artists. Indeed, the mid-90’s in now seen as a turning point for Berlin and for European art in general. As artists and galleries brought new life to a long-dormant city, Berlin met and exceeded widely held expectations that it was destined to become Europe’s premier art center in the post-cold-war era.
The program ran for six weeks and provided artists with meals, lodging, studio space and materials donated by local businesses. Artists were encouraged to work collaboratively and to freely exchange ideas. Each of the three annual workshops culminated in an exhibition at Little Switzerland’s space on Auguststraße.
